CityNet Email Protection Measures

We are working on implementing new features on our mail server that will provide further protection against viruses and worms.

Currently CityNet protects our subscribers by changing the extension (the last three characters of a file name like .exe) on a number of files so that they cannot be inadvertently clicked on and activated. What we do is change the dot (.) to a tilde (~). The following extensions are altered:

".exe", ".com", ".lnk", ".bat", ".pif", ".scr", ".asd", ".chm", ".cil", ".dll", ".hlp", ".hta", ".js" , ".nws", ".ocx", ".reg", ".shs", ".shb", ".vb" , ".wsc", ".wsf", ".wsh",

If we need to run a file that we have altered, all you have to do is save the file and change the name back to the dot extension.
